PEW 310 - Fundamentals of Early-School Pedagogy
Year III, 5th semester, 30 lectures/30 seminars, 4 hrs/week, 4 ECTS points, course credit

Recommended courses: PSD 314

The course in early-school pedagogy covers topics related to the education of children in the early classes of primary school in a variety of different areas (Polish language, mathematics, nature studies, art, music, technical and physical education). The educational aims which are met within the framework of school, and activities which take place outside school, are considered. Early-school pedagogy, as an academic discipline, aims to establish the theoretical basis of education, understood in the widest possible sense, for children at the first levels of primary school, and presents opportunities for applying them in school practice. It formulates recommendations of an instrumental nature and creates theories and theoretical systems for determining the rationale for principles applied to the pedagogy in this field. The discipline is concerned with analysing data and observations based on the activities of children at the younger levels of primary school. It highlights opportunities for the application of educational innovations at the initial levels of general education. It provides a justification for the autonomy of early-school pedagogy in view of its particular functions and organisation, as well as the mechanisms and patterns of development in children aged 7-10. It is concerned with establishing the optimal means for : activating the creative potential of pupils at the first levels of primary school, developing their interests and skills and overcoming difficulties and failures in learning. The subject is also concerned with a study of the factors determining the effectiveness of the teaching-learning process and establishes criteria for determining the contents of a syllabus, its structure and scope. It provides a rationale for the practical realisation of general educational principles determined by didactics and issues of integration and correlation. It is has a pro-pedeutological nature - that is, it specifies the principles for the optimal preparation of children for the later stages of education and the opportunities for them to become aware of their mental processes during the course of their own activities.

The discipline also determines criteria for the evaluation of the pedagogical work of the teacher at early-school levels, as well as defining the principles for planning and organising didactic and educational activities.
